Pathnote Privacy Policy
In short: Pathnote has no servers, accounts, analytics, or tracking. Everything you record stays in your own browser on your own device. The developer never receives your guides, screenshots, or browsing activity.
What Pathnote is
Pathnote is a Chrome extension that records the steps you take on a website (clicks, typing, selections) and turns them into an editable step-by-step guide with screenshots, which you can download as a Word document or PDF.
Information Pathnote handles
Only while you are actively recording, and only on a website you have given Pathnote permission to access, Pathnote handles:
- Screenshots of the visible browser tab at each recorded step.
- Step details: the kind of action (for example "click" or "select"), a short label taken from the element you interacted with, the page's address and title, the time, and the element's position on screen.
- Text you type into ordinary form fields, used as the step title (for example Type "Main Street"). Values typed into password fields, payment-card fields, one-time codes, and fields that look like identity or account numbers (for example SSN, tax ID, PIN, or bank account) are never recorded; their steps read Type ••••.
- Edits you make in the Pathnote editor, such as titles, descriptions, highlights, blur boxes, and crops.
Pathnote does not read or record pages when you are not recording, and it cannot record on sites you have not allowed.
Where it is stored
All of this is stored locally in your browser's extension storage (IndexedDB) on your device. It is not uploaded, synced, or sent anywhere by Pathnote. Guides remain until you delete them in Pathnote or remove the extension, which deletes its stored data.
Sharing
Pathnote does not sell, share, or transfer your data to anyone, and does not use it for advertising, credit decisions, or any purpose other than creating your guides. Data only leaves your device if you download an export (Word or PDF) and choose to share that file yourself. Screenshots contain whatever was visible on screen, so review and blur them before sharing.
Feedback
Pathnote shows optional "Send feedback" and "Rate Pathnote" links, and may open a short feedback form after the extension is removed. These open ordinary web pages (a feedback form and the Chrome Web Store). Pathnote does not attach any guide, screenshot, or browsing data to them; anything sent there is only what you choose to type, and it is handled under that service's own privacy policy.
Permissions
- Website access (asked per site): when you start recording, Chrome asks you to allow Pathnote on that one website so it can capture your steps there.
- activeTab and scripting: to add the recorder to the tab you choose and capture its visible screenshot.
- storage and unlimitedStorage: to keep the current recording session and store your guides and screenshots locally.
- favicon: to show each recorded website's icon from Chrome's local cache, without contacting the website.
- sidePanel: to show recording controls and captured steps next to the page.
Children
Pathnote is a productivity tool not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date. If Pathnote ever begins sending data off your device, this policy will be updated before that change is released.
